Fall U6 & U8 Rules Decision

This spring soccer season we implemented a couple of changes to the U6 (4 and 5-year olds) and U8 (6 and 7-year olds) divisions effecting field size and number of players on the field in an effort to help kids develop their ball handling skills and give them more scoring opportunities.

After much discussion in Board Meetings, research, first-hand experience, observation of the games during spring soccer, and hearing from a variety of views among parents/coaches involved in the spring season, we have come to the following decisions for these age groups for fall 2013 that we believe will be of great benefit to these young, thriving players:

U6 Rules:
  • 3v3
  • No goalies
  • Kick-ins instead of throw-ins
  • 5 to 6 players on a team.
  • Field size: 25-30 yds. long by 15-20 yds. wide.
  • Goals: portable pop-up (40" H x 72" W).
  • No split field/team approach like in Spring Soccer 2013. But we need enough parents signing up to be coaches and assistant coaches.

U8 Rules:
  • 5v5
  • Goalies included
  • Throw-ins
  • Field size - 35 yds. long by 25 yds. wide. Bigger than spring soccer, smaller than last fall.
  • Goals: normal fall season size (6' H x 9' W)
  • 7 to 8 players per team.
  • No split field/team approach like in Spring Soccer 2013. But we need enough parents signing up to be coaches and assistant coaches.

Soon we will add to our FAQ section answers with the reasoning for the changes. Ultimately it is for the greater development of the skills of these young players and for their level of enjoyment by getting more touches on the ball, having more scoring opportunities, and every player being involved in more aspects of the game.

LYS announce U-12 Travel Teams

Here at Lassen Youth Soccer, we are striving to find the best possible alternatives for your children to advance in soccer.  Many other leagues in District IX provide travel opportunities in U-12.  We have decided to open this option up concurrently with our Rec Program.  This means that a player can be on two teams in one season, one to play at home, and the other to travel.  This travel team will be made up of players from the Rec teams, and Travel practices/games will not interfere with Rec practices/games.  If you are interested in learning more or signing up your son/daughter for a second team, please contact Keith Crosby (Player Agent) at kcrosby5779@hotmail.com, Caleb Schortz (Registrar) at soccercoach365@yahoo.com, or call the soccer hotline 252-4818

Important Notice to all Coaches:
Coaches to Be Live-Scanned for Fall 2013

In the past, LYS has performed background checks on all volunteer coaches for the protection and safety of the children involved in Lassen Youth Soccer. A new, stricter California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) policy to help further protect the children of youth soccer will be in effect for the fall 2013 season. All coaches, assistant coaches, and team volunteers must undergo a Live Scan (finger printing) in addition to the background check via the Risk Management Disclosure form.

The Live Scan DOES NOT check immigrants for citizenship status. Rather, it is solely for the purpose of checking criminal records. The results, if positive for a criminal record, are NOT SHARED with the public. LYS President and Registrar are notified by the Department of Justice only if an individual fails the Live Scan/background check. No details are provided to LYS, just a notice of failure to pass. Department of Justice only shares specific information with the individual, via letter, if he or she has failed a background check because of criminal record.

Remember, this is for the safety of the children of Lassen Youth Soccer. Thanks to all our coaches for the time and efforts you volunteer and pour into the youth of Lassen County to teach them this great sport.

Thank you,
Danny Matchniff
LYS President
